American Center Opens for Public

Suva, Fiji – The American Center Suva, administered by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Suva, has started accepting applications for membership, which is free. With this new no-cost membership, patrons will be able to access the American Center, located inside the U.S. Embassy Suva, without an appointment during open hours. This membership option is to facilitate access to the resources and activities at the American Center.

During National Library Week sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts, U.S. Embassy Suva has been promoting the membership drive to the general public at Sukuna Park. To register, patrons need to submit the membership form along with a copy of their photo identification. Please send inquiries to arcsuva@state.gov

Once registered, patrons can come to the American Center Monday through Thursday 14:00-17:00. Members will be allowed access after presenting valid photo identification to the guards at the main entrance of the Embassy. Members will then be escorted into the American Center. Like all visitors to the U.S. Embassy, members are prohibited from bringing in any electronic items which include cell phones, cameras, tablets, and laptops.

The mission of the American Center is to provide information about the United States of America – its society, politics, history, culture, economy, democratic traditions, and other issues of interest to Fijian audiences. The American Center provides access to a collection of reference books, electronic resources, internet access, and basic computer accessibility at six public workstations. Additionally, the Center has a wide collection of magazines, DVDs, games, and science and technology tools.

Staff at the Center also host programs to promote education, increase member opportunities and highlight aspects of American culture, through movie screenings, book discussion clubs, digital video conferences, speaker events, and themed exhibitions.

The American Center is open for use by patrons Monday–Thursday from 14:00-17:00 and at other times by appointment. The American center is closed on weekends and U.S. and Fijian Public Holidays.
