American Resource Center Suva

The American Resource Center (ARC) Suva is administered by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Suva, Fiji Islands. The ARC’s mission is to provide information about the United States of America including topics on U.S. society, history, politics, culture, education, democratic traditions, holidays and other issues of interest to Fijian and pacific regional audiences.

The ARC Suva was opened in 2012 and holds a collection of varied resources predominantly on the United States of America which facilitate the research needs of audiences by providing access to a variety of traditional and electronic resources including several high value online databases.  The ARC collection holdings have print, DVDs, periodicals, e-books and recently added makerspace resources including a 3D printer as part of its education outreach programs on science, technology, engineering and math.  As part of its delivery mechanism, the ARC integrates emerging social media and technology to promote and ensure a timely provision of information and service awareness to audiences. Since its establishment, the ARC has hosted a variety of events at the space including virtual programs to highlight different aspects of American culture and values with audiences locally and regionally. Education advising on higher education in the U.S. and scholarships are part of ARC services and interested patrons are welcome to visit and speak to an adviser or email us on the contact email noted below.

The ARC space is open to the public and provides free internet access and basic computer accessibility at three public workstations. ARC membership is free and access to the ARC is through appointment with the ARC Director, at least 24 hours prior to visit.

FOREIGN NATIONAL STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM

AMERICAN CENTER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE: The program provides university students with exposure and work experience contributing to acquisition of new employment skills in preparation for the 21st century work force environment. The Public Diplomacy Office (PDO) Student Internship benefits both the U.S. Embassy Suva and students by providing a valuable educational experience leading to a course credit to students while assisting the U.S. Embassy accomplish important mission goals.

The Embassy of the United States of America in Suva is seeking four (4) part-time, unpaid university students as interns at the Public Diplomacy Office.

OPEN TO:                              All non-U.S. citizen university student residents in Fiji
POSITION:                             Public Affairs Section Student Interns (4 positions)
OPENING DATE:                   November 15, 2019
CLOSING DATE:                   December 16, 2019
WORK HOURS:                    Part-time, 5-8 hours/week
LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: Three (3) to Six (6) months (depending on course requirements)

BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE INTERN POSITION

PAS Student Interns will be responsible for the following daily tasks:

  • Daily assistance at the American Center Suva including greeting of patrons/guests
  • Receiving books and journals
  • Distributing past journal issues to local libraries
  • Promote/market the American Center, EducationUSA, Embassy programs
  • Ensure patrons adhere to the Center’s rules
  • Support PDO programs including STEAM, Educational outreach, Cultural, English language programming
  • Host group discussions, clubs and debate activities
  • Assist with set up of outreach events before and after
  • Shelve books, magazines and DVDs
  • Support other programmatic or administrative tasks as requested
  • Assist in maintaining the American Center and Education USA collections
  • Conduct research for proposals, event activities for the section or patrons
  • Photograph events
  • Support Facebook and other social media activities and related tasks as required by media specialist and social media coordinator
  • Interns will receive on the job training
  • All duties and activities will be performed in the English language

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

NOTE: All applicants are instructed to address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

  • Must be a currently enrolled university student in Fiji
  • Must be able to receive credit from the university for the internship
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a dynamic team
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment and a non-U.S. citizen
  • Must have demonstrated the potential to accomplish the type of work to be performed
  • Good command of both spoken and written English is required

ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Non-host country foreign nationals who are legal resident students of Fiji are required to submit the same documentation as the other applicants, plus a legal residency permit.
  • All PDO Student Intern Program applicants must have graduated from high school or equivalent secondary school prior to becoming an intern
  • If selected, the student must pass a security background check and health screening

PLEASE NOTE: INTERNS ARE NOT CONSIDERED U.S. EMBASSY EMPLOYEES

  • The intern will not be considered as a U.S. Federal Employee
  • There will be NO employment benefits associated with this position: annual leave accrual, sick leave, etc.
  • There will be NO compensation or stipends.
