The United States throught the State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA) offers a range of educational and cultural exchange programs in the U.S. and around the world which aim to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. Programs available to Pacific Islanders from Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga, Tuvalu and Nauru include the prestigious Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) for teachers and the Community Solutions Program, tailored to the best community leaders in the country. The U.S. South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP), a competitive, merit-based scholarship program provides opportunities for Bachelor and Master’s degree study at the University of Hawai’i. Young Pacific Leaders (YPL) events brings together young, emerging, indigenous Pacific leaders with a collective capacity to address common issues facing the region such as education and resource management.
