Medical facilities are good on the main island, but they are more limited on the outer islands. There is one public and one private hospital, various private clinics and many pharmacies in Noumea. Outside the city center, medical supplies may be limited. Each town has a community clinic, where you will be able to get first aid treatment. Health care is expensive in Noumea, but it is free on the Loyalty Islands. A 24/7 hyperbaric (decompression) chamber is located in Noumea at the CHT Gaston-Bourret.

There are good healthcare services available on the bigger islands, with the best-equipped one being the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française. There is one recompression chamber in Tahiti, at the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française. Pharmacies or clinics for basic medical care are available on most islands, but for anything more serious, a patient will need to be evacuated to one of the main islands or to a regional center.
