Diversity Visa

The Immigration Act of 1990 established the Diversity Visa (DV) program, where 55,000 immigrant visas would be available in an annual lottery, starting in fiscal year 1995. The lottery aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States, by selecting applicants mostly from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States in the previous five years.

To apply for a diversity visa, follow the steps on the Diversity Visa Process on usvisas.state.gov.  Once you have completed those steps, review the instructions given to you by the Kentucky Consular Center (KCC), along with the information presented on this website, for further guidance and instructions.

Your interview will be scheduled when and if there is a visa number available for you. Visa number allocations are determined by provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) which determines the number of diversity immigrant visas available each year. The total number of diversity visas is allocated by visa category and region of the world. The allocations are revised monthly as available visas are issued. Each month the Department of State publishes the Visa Bulletin which contains important information about updated allocations and the likelihood of a diversity visa number being available. Anyone may view the most recent updated information by clicking Visa Bulletin.

You will receive an e-mail from KCC to let you know that an interview has been scheduled at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate you selected on your DS-260 form. After you have been notified of your scheduled interview, you will need to take the following important steps in advance of the interview date:

  1. Carefully Reviewyour scheduling information in the Entrant Status Check on the E-DV website, noting the date, time, and location of your immigrant visa interview.
  2. Review U.S. Embassy Interview Instructions. You will receive additional instructions from the Embassy where you will be applying and be interviewed, so please review those instructions carefully. If you have questions about the Diversity Visa application process, please contact the embassy at email suvaiv@state.gov .
