Weather Alert – Tropical Disturbance approaching Fiji – U.S. Embassy Suva, Fiji (December 30, 2018)


The Fiji Meterological Service advises that a tropical disturbance is approaching the Fiji Islands. The storm is expected to intensify, possibly becoming a tropical cyclone. The storm is expected to affect Fiji starting Monday evening, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Heavy rain warnings are in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaviti Group and the eastern half of Viti Levu. A flood warning is in force for low-lying areas in the eastern half of Viti Levu.

Actions to take:
•       Monitor local media and weather forecasts
•        Follow directions of local officials
•        Drive cautiously and avoid flooded areas. Be aware of the possibility of flash flooding.
